Glyconutrients and Ciclesonide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Ciclesonide

Ciclesonide falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Glyconutrients interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that glyconutrients stimulate certain immune responses. Theoretically, glyconutrients might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), corticosteroids (glucocorticoids), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thinking behind this one. Ciclesonide (Alvesco, Omnaris) is an inhaled corticosteroid that calms swelling and irritation in your airways, partly by quieting down certain immune responses. Glyconutrients, on the other hand, are promoted as supplements that stimulate the immune system. So in theory, they could work against the calming effect of your steroid, possibly making asthma control a little less reliable.

I want to be honest about how soft this concern is. It comes only from lab (test tube) research, not from real patients, so it's theoretical. With an inhaled medicine like ciclesonide, very little reaches the rest of your body anyway, which makes a meaningful clash even less likely. Still, since glyconutrients offer little proven benefit, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding them.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ciclesonide page

“Ciclesonide (Alvesco, Omnaris, Zetonna) is a corticosteroid for asthma and nasal allergies, and even though it is inhaled rather than swallowed, its supplement list warrants genuine care. The body clears it through the CYP3A4 enzyme, and 121 of the 166 ingredients on file nudge that pathway one way or the other.”

About Glyconutrients

What is Glyconutrients?

  • General immune support
  • Overall wellness and energy
  • Cognitive or memory support
  • Inflammation
  • Digestive health

Glyconutrients are supplements containing certain sugar molecules (monosaccharides) that marketers claim are essential for cell communication and health. The science behind most health claims is weak and largely promotional, and your body already makes these sugars from a normal diet. They are generally low-risk, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using them, and don't rely on them to treat any disease.
