Here's the simple version: both of these can pull your potassium down, and that's where they could add up. Gossypol has been shown to lower potassium, and stimulant laxatives like phenolphthalein (and bisacodyl in these combo products) can do the same by speeding things through your gut, so you lose fluid and minerals with each bowel movement. Put them together and the risk of low potassium (hypokalemia) may stack.

Low potassium can leave you feeling weak, tired, crampy, or give you an irregular heartbeat. That said, this is a theoretical concern based on how each one works, not a proven case report. Honestly, gossypol isn't a safe self-care product to begin with, so please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything.

Gossypol is a toxic yellow pigment from cotton plants that has been studied mainly as an experimental male contraceptive because it can lower sperm production. It is not an approved or safe over-the-counter supplement, and it carries serious risks including possibly permanent infertility, low potassium, and organ toxicity. It should not be used for self-treatment.

About Bisacodyl

What Is Bisacodyl Used For?

Brand names: Correctol, Modane Plus

Bisacodyl is used for the temporary relief of occasional constipation and irregularity. Oral tablets (including Dulcolax Stimulant Laxative and Fleet tablets) generally produce a bowel movement within 6 to 12 hours.

Rectal suppositories (such as Dulcolax Laxative, Conlax, Avedana Gentle Laxative, and others) typically work within 15 minutes to 1 hour. The Fleet Enema (rectal) is also used for relief of fecal impaction (a severe blockage of stool) and for removal of residue after barium administration (a procedure used in certain imaging tests), and usually works within 5 to 20 minutes.
