Spironolactone falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Gossypol interacts with.

Theoretically, gossypol might increase the risk of hypokalemia when taken with potassium-depleting diuretic drugs.
Clinical research shows that gossypol has potassium-depleting effects and can cause hypokalemia. Initiation of potassium supplementation or an increase in potassium supplement dose may be necessary for some patients.

Here's an interesting wrinkle with this pairing. Gossypol has been shown to lower potassium levels on its own. Spironolactone, on the other hand, is a potassium-sparing diuretic, meaning it actually helps your body hold onto potassium rather than dump it. So these two pull in opposite directions when it comes to potassium.

The note on file is really geared toward potassium-wasting water pills. With spironolactone, the bigger picture is that your potassium could swing either way, which makes it hard to predict and easy to get wrong. Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how the two behave, not strong human data. Honestly, gossypol isn't a safe supplement to be taking at all. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining anything like this.

Gossypol is a toxic yellow pigment from cotton plants that has been studied mainly as an experimental male contraceptive because it can lower sperm production. It is not an approved or safe over-the-counter supplement, and it carries serious risks including possibly permanent infertility, low potassium, and organ toxicity. It should not be used for self-treatment.

About Spironolactone

What Is Spironolactone Used For?

Brand names: Aldactone, Spiroton, Carospir

Spironolactone tablets (including Aldactone) are used to treat moderate-to-severe heart failure, high blood pressure, and fluid retention (edema) caused by liver cirrhosis or nephrotic syndrome. They are also used to diagnose and manage primary hyperaldosteronism — a condition where the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone.

Spironolactone oral suspension shares several of these uses — heart failure, high blood pressure, and edema from liver cirrhosis — but is not the same as Aldactone and is not therapeutically interchangeable with it. Your prescriber will choose the right form for your situation.
