Chlorthalidone falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Gossypol interacts with.

Theoretically, gossypol might increase the risk of hypokalemia when taken with potassium-depleting diuretic drugs.
Clinical research shows that gossypol has potassium-depleting effects and can cause hypokalemia. Initiation of potassium supplementation or an increase in potassium supplement dose may be necessary for some patients.

Here's the concern with this pairing. Chlorthalidone is a thiazide-type water pill, and one of its well-known effects is lowering your body's potassium as it flushes out extra salt and fluid. Gossypol, on its own, has also been shown to push potassium down. So if you put the two together, the worry is simply that they could gang up and drop your potassium too low (a problem called hypokalemia).

Low potassium can leave you feeling weak, crampy, or tired, and in more serious cases it can throw off your heart rhythm. To be fair, this particular combination is theoretical, based on how each one behaves rather than studies of the two taken together. Still, gossypol isn't a safe self-treatment supplement to begin with. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before mixing anything with your chlorthalidone.

Gossypol is a toxic yellow pigment from cotton plants that has been studied mainly as an experimental male contraceptive because it can lower sperm production. It is not an approved or safe over-the-counter supplement, and it carries serious risks including possibly permanent infertility, low potassium, and organ toxicity. It should not be used for self-treatment.

What Is Chlorthalidone Used For?

Brand names: Hygroton, Thalitone

Chlorthalidone is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Chlorthalidone is also used as an add-on treatment for edema (fluid buildup) caused by heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. Thalitone is additionally indicated for edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease including nephrotic syndrome.
