Venlafaxine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Greater Celandine interacts with.

Research in vitro shows that chelidonine, a constituent of greater celandine, inhibits cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) enzyme activity. Theoretically, greater celandine might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and many others.

Here's the gist for your venlafaxine (Effexor). Your body relies partly on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break this medication down. A compound in greater celandine, chelidonine, has been shown in lab dish studies to slow that same enzyme. In theory, that could let more venlafaxine build up in your system, which may mean stronger effects and more side effects like nausea, headache, jitteriness, a faster heartbeat, raised blood pressure, or trouble sleeping.

I want to keep this in perspective: this concern comes only from test-tube research, not real people, so we don't actually know if it matters in practice. The bigger issue is that greater celandine has been tied to serious liver damage, so most experts advise against taking it at all. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Venlafaxine is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) across all available formulations. Extended-release capsules (including Effexor XR) are also approved for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic disorder (PD).

Extended-release tablets are approved for major depressive disorder and social anxiety disorder. Immediate-release venlafaxine tablets are indicated for major depressive disorder only.
