Venlafaxine falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Ephedra interacts with.

Theoretically, ephedra might have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval.
Even in healthy volunteers, EKG changes including prolonged QT interval and premature atrial contractions have been reported with ingestion of recommended doses of ephedra. Ephedra may have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval. This may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.

Here's the concern with pairing ephedra and venlafaxine. Venlafaxine can stretch out a part of your heart's electrical cycle called the QT interval. Ephedra, which contains stimulants like ephedrine, can do the same thing and also pushes up your heart rate and blood pressure. Stack the two together and you raise the odds of a dangerous heart rhythm problem (an arrhythmia). On top of that, both affect norepinephrine, so combining them can really overstimulate your system.

Honestly, ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for good reason, and I wouldn't use it at all, especially while on venlafaxine. If you've been taking something with ephedra in it, please talk with your pharmacist or doctor about safer options before making any changes.

What Is Venlafaxine Used For?

Brand names: Effexor XR, Effexor

Venlafaxine is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) across all available formulations. Extended-release capsules (including Effexor XR) are also approved for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic disorder (PD).

Extended-release tablets are approved for major depressive disorder and social anxiety disorder. Immediate-release venlafaxine tablets are indicated for major depressive disorder only.
