Here's the thing to keep in mind with clarithromycin (Biaxin) and guar gum: because guar gum forms a thick gel in your gut, it can grab onto things and slow down how much of a swallowed medicine actually gets absorbed into your bloodstream. For an antibiotic, that matters. If less clarithromycin gets in, you may not reach the levels needed to knock out the infection, which can mean a slower recovery or a treatment that doesn't fully work.

This is rated a moderate, possible interaction with modest evidence, so it isn't a sure thing, but it's easy to sidestep. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your clarithromycin first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the guar gum. Run your exact timing past your pharmacist or doctor to be safe.

Guar gum is a soluble, gel-forming fiber from the guar bean that may modestly help with cholesterol, blood sugar, and bowel regularity. It is generally safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements can cause gas, bloating, and a risk of throat or gut blockage if not taken with enough water. Always take it with plenty of fluid and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Clarithromycin

What Is Clarithromycin Used For?

Brand names: Biaxin, Biaxin XL

Clarithromycin tablets and oral suspension treat a range of mild to moderate bacterial infections in adults and children, including community-acquired pneumonia, acute sinus infections, acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, strep throat and tonsillitis, uncomplicated skin infections, and middle ear infections in children. Tablets are also used in adults to eliminate H. pylori bacteria (in combination with other medicines) to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence.

Clarithromycin tablets — but not the extended-release tablet — are also used to treat and prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections in people with advanced HIV. Clarithromycin extended-release tablets are approved only for acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, and community-acquired pneumonia in adults — not for the other conditions listed above.
