Methyclothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Horsetail interacts with.

Theoretically, taking horsetail with diuretic drugs might increase potassium loss and the risk of hypokalemia.
Laboratory research shows that various species of horsetail have diuretic properties. Due to its diuretic effects, there has been concern that taking horsetail along with potassium-depleting diuretics might increase the risk for hypokalemia. However, pharmacokinetic research in humans shows that taking horsetail 900 mg daily for 4 days does not affect urinary excretion of electrolytes, including potassium and sodium, despite having a diuretic effect similar to taking hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg daily. It is unclear if taking horsetail for a longer duration would affect electrolyte levels. Until more is known, use with caution.

Here's the gist: methyclothiazide is a thiazide water pill, and one of its known downsides is that it can pull potassium out of your body. Horsetail also acts like a mild diuretic. So the theory is that stacking the two could lower your potassium a bit more than the pill alone, which we call hypokalemia. Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat.

The honest part: this concern is mostly theoretical. In fact, a short human study found horsetail didn't change potassium or sodium levels, though we don't know about long-term use. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since this is a guess based on how both work, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if your potassium tends to run low.

What Is Methyclothiazide Used For?

  • Methyclothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure. Methyclothiazide is also used to treat edema (fluid retention; excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various medical problems, including heart, kidney, and liver disease and to treat edema caused by using certain medications including estrogen and corticosteroids. Methyclothiazide is in a class of medications called diuretics ('water pills'). It works by causing the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
