Flutamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Hu Zhang interacts with.

Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP1A2 enzyme. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for flutamide (Eulexin). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help process flutamide. Hu Zhang contains resveratrol, which in lab tests can slow that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let flutamide build up a bit more than usual, which might raise the chance of its typical side effects, things like diarrhea, nausea, hot flashes, breast tenderness, or stress on the liver.

The important part: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research. It has not actually been reported in people, so I don't want you to panic. Still, because flutamide can already affect the liver, it's worth mentioning Hu Zhang to your oncologist or pharmacist before you start it so they can keep an eye on things.

Flutamide also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. However, a clinical study in adults with NAFLD found that adding resveratrol 3000 mg daily for 8 weeks did not necessitate dose adjustments to any established medications metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here's the gist with Hu Zhang and flutamide. Flutamide is cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Hu Zhang contains resveratrol, which in test-tube studies can slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in your body, flutamide could build up a bit, which in theory might mean more of its usual effects, like nausea, diarrhea, or stress on the liver (flutamide already needs liver monitoring).

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It's based on lab studies, not real-world cases, and one human trial using a hefty resveratrol dose didn't force any dose changes. Still, since flutamide and the liver are involved, it's worth a quick chat with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding this herb.

About Flutamide

What Is Flutamide Used For?

Brand names: Eulexin, Euflex

Eulexin (flutamide) capsules are used to treat prostate cancer in men. They are always used together with an LHRH agonist (a hormone-lowering injection), never alone.

Eulexin is indicated for two stages of prostate cancer: locally confined Stage B2-C prostate cancer (used alongside goserelin acetate and radiation therapy, starting eight weeks before radiation begins) and Stage D2 metastatic prostate cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the prostate, taken with an LHRH agonist until the disease progresses).
