Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Pimozide
Pimozide falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Huperzine A interacts with.
Huperzine A has acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibiting effects. In animal models, huperzine A reversed cognitive deficits induced by scopolamine, an anticholinergic drug.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: Pimozide has some anticholinergic activity, meaning it dampens a brain chemical called acetylcholine. Huperzine A works in the opposite direction, raising acetylcholine levels. So in theory, taking them together could blunt a bit of pimozide's anticholinergic side, and that's the interaction on file.
I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes only from animal and lab work (the scopolamine studies), not from people taking pimozide. So the real-world effect is uncertain and may be small. That said, pimozide is a serious medication that affects heart rhythm and needs careful handling, so don't pair it with huperzine A on your own. Run it past your pharmacist or doctor first, who can weigh it against your full medication list.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pimozide page
“Pimozide (Orap), prescribed mainly for severe tics in Tourette syndrome, is a medicine I ask patients to check every supplement against before adding it. Twelve of the 180 ingredients on file rate major, and most of the risk runs through one pathway: 121 of them affect CYP3A4, the enzyme that clears pimozide.”

About Huperzine A
What is Huperzine A?
- Memory and cognitive support
- Alzheimer's disease and dementia
- Age-related memory decline
- Focus and mental performance
- Myasthenia gravis (traditional/older use)
Huperzine A is a purified compound from a Chinese clubmoss that acts like a mild cholinesterase inhibitor, similar in mechanism to some prescription Alzheimer's drugs. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory in people with dementia, but the evidence is limited and the quality is uncertain. Because it is biologically active and not well standardized, talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Pimozide
What Is Pimozide Used For?
Brand name: Orap
Pimozide tablets are used to suppress the motor tics (involuntary movements) and phonic tics (involuntary sounds or vocalizations) that occur in Tourette's Disorder. It is reserved for patients whose daily life or development is severely affected by these tics.
Pimozide is not a first-choice treatment, and it is not meant for tics that are only mildly bothersome or cosmetic in nature. It should only be considered when standard treatments have not worked well enough.
