ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Trospium
Trospium falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Huperzine A interacts with.
Huperzine A has acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibiting effects. In animal models, huperzine A reversed cognitive deficits induced by scopolamine, an anticholinergic drug.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with trospium (Sanctura) and Huperzine A: they pull in opposite directions. Trospium works by blocking the action of acetylcholine to calm an overactive bladder. Huperzine A does the reverse, raising acetylcholine levels by slowing the enzyme that breaks it down. So in theory, taking them together could blunt how well trospium controls your symptoms, meaning more of that frequent, urgent, hard-to-hold-back urination you're trying to settle.
I want to be honest about the evidence here: it's pretty thin, based mostly on animal studies, not on people taking these two together. It's a possible interaction, not a sure thing. If you're considering Huperzine A, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on how your bladder symptoms respond.

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Trospium page
“Trospium (Sanctura, Regurin) calms an overactive bladder by blocking acetylcholine, and most of the 47 supplements flagged against it press on that same nerve signal. Thirty carry anticholinergic activity of their own, adding dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, and confusion, and two of the three major ratings sit in that group: h…”

About Huperzine A
What is Huperzine A?
- Memory and cognitive support
- Alzheimer's disease and dementia
- Age-related memory decline
- Focus and mental performance
- Myasthenia gravis (traditional/older use)
Huperzine A is a purified compound from a Chinese clubmoss that acts like a mild cholinesterase inhibitor, similar in mechanism to some prescription Alzheimer's drugs. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory in people with dementia, but the evidence is limited and the quality is uncertain. Because it is biologically active and not well standardized, talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Trospium
What Is Trospium Used For?
Brand names: Sanctura, Trosec, Regurin
Trospium — available as tablets and extended-release capsules — is used to treat overactive bladder (OAB). It targets three main symptoms: the sudden, hard-to-control urge to urinate (urgency), leaking urine when that urge hits (urge urinary incontinence), and needing to urinate much more often than usual (urinary frequency).
Both Trospium Chloride Tablets and Trospium Chloride Extended-Release Capsules carry this indication. Your prescriber will choose the formulation that fits your schedule and health history.
