Huperzine A has acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibiting effects. In animal models, huperzine A reversed cognitive deficits induced by scopolamine, an anticholinergic drug.

Here's the basic tug-of-war: amitriptyline (Elavil) has some anticholinergic activity, meaning it blocks the brain chemical acetylcholine. Huperzine A works in the opposite direction by slowing the enzyme that breaks acetylcholine down, so it raises those levels. In theory, they could partly cancel each other out, and the huperzine A might blunt some of amitriptyline's effect.

I'll be honest with you, this is a theoretical concern based only on animal research, not real-world human cases, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since both are active on the same system, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you notice your mood symptoms slipping.
