Huperzine A has acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibiting effects. In animal models, huperzine A reversed cognitive deficits induced by scopolamine, an anticholinergic drug.

Here's the simple version. Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine that also has anticholinergic activity, meaning it works partly by lowering the action of a brain chemical called acetylcholine. Huperzine A pushes in the opposite direction. It raises acetylcholine levels by slowing the enzyme that breaks it down. So in theory, taking the two together could blunt some of what hydroxyzine is trying to do, like its calming or sedating effect, or its help with itching.

I want to be honest about the strength of this one. It's theoretical, based mostly on animal and lab work, not human studies, so the real-world effect may be small or hard to notice. Still, if you're using hydroxyzine for anxiety or sleep and it doesn't seem to work as well, mention the huperzine A to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Huperzine A is a purified compound from a Chinese clubmoss that acts like a mild cholinesterase inhibitor, similar in mechanism to some prescription Alzheimer's drugs. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory in people with dementia, but the evidence is limited and the quality is uncertain. Because it is biologically active and not well standardized, talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Hydroxyzine Used For?

Brand names: Atarax, Vistaril, Ucerax

Hydroxyzine is used to relieve anxiety and tension related to psychoneurosis (anxiety-based mental health conditions) and as a supportive treatment when anxiety is part of another medical condition. Oral forms — including tablets, capsules, and oral solution — are used for anxiety relief and to manage itching (pruritus) caused by allergic conditions such as chronic urticaria (hives), atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and histamine-driven itch. Oral forms are also used as a sedative before and after surgery or general anesthesia.

Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride intramuscular injection is used specifically when a shot is needed — for example, in acute psychiatric or emotional emergencies, acute alcohol withdrawal with anxiety symptoms or delirium tremens, control of nausea and vomiting (except during pregnancy), and as pre- and post-operative or pre- and post-partum supportive medication to reduce narcotic requirements and control nausea.
