Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) INHIBITORS
Why this applies to Bupropion, Naltrexone
Bupropion, Naltrexone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) INHIBITORS — the group Iboga interacts with.
Ibogaine, the active constituent of iboga, is a substrate of CYP2D6. One pharmacokinetic study shows that taking the CYP2D6 inhibitor paroxetine prior to taking ibogaine 20 mg increases the exposure to ibogaine and its metabolite noribogaine by 2-fold when compared with ibogaine alone.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the key thing to understand about this pairing. The bupropion in Contrave is a known blocker of a liver enzyme called CYP2D6, and that same enzyme is what your body uses to clear ibogaine, the active compound in Iboga. So if you took them together, the Contrave could slow ibogaine's breakdown and let it pile up. In one study, a similar CYP2D6 blocker roughly doubled the amount of ibogaine in the body. That matters because Iboga itself can trigger dangerous heart rhythm problems, and higher levels make that risk worse.
Honestly, the bigger message is that Iboga (ibogaine) is illegal in the U.S. and genuinely unsafe outside research, so this isn't a combination to attempt. If you're on Contrave and curious about Iboga, please talk it through with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bupropion, Naltrexone page
“Anyone taking Contrave (bupropion with naltrexone) for weight management should treat this list with genuine care, starting with the single major-rated entry, activated charcoal, which can soak up the medication in the gut and sharply blunt its effect. Beyond that, two themes dominate.”
