Citalopram falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Iboga interacts with.

Theoretically, taking iboga with serotonergic drugs might increase levels of serotonin, resulting in additive effects with serotonergic drugs.
Ibogaine, a constituent in iboga, has serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with iboga might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using iboga with serotonergic drugs.

Here's the concern with pairing these two. Your citalopram (Celexa) already raises serotonin in the brain, which is how it helps with depression. Iboga's main compound, ibogaine, also pushes serotonin activity up. Stacking them could add up to too much serotonin, and that raises the risk of serotonin syndrome. Watch for things like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or confusion. Those signs need quick medical attention.

This warning is theoretical, based on how each one works rather than solid human studies, so I don't want to alarm you. But keep in mind Iboga has its own serious heart rhythm risks and is illegal in the U.S. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything with your citalopram.

What Is Citalopram Used For?

Brand name: Celexa

Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
