Lorcaserin falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Iboga interacts with.

Theoretically, taking iboga with serotonergic drugs might increase levels of serotonin, resulting in additive effects with serotonergic drugs.
Ibogaine, a constituent in iboga, has serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with iboga might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using iboga with serotonergic drugs.

Here's the concern with putting these two together. Lorcaserin (Belviq) works by turning up serotonin activity in the brain to help you feel full sooner. Iboga, through its main compound ibogaine, also pushes serotonin levels up. Stack them and you're nudging serotonin from two directions at once, which could raise the risk of serotonin syndrome, things like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or confusion.

Honestly, this is a theoretical worry based on how each one behaves, not proven cases. But Iboga carries its own serious dangers (including heart rhythm problems) and isn't legal here, so I'd steer clear of it entirely. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything with Lorcaserin.

Lorcaserin also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) INHIBITORS.

Theoretically, taking iboga with CYP2D6 inhibitors might increase the levels and clinical effects of ibogaine.
Ibogaine, the active constituent of iboga, is a substrate of CYP2D6. One pharmacokinetic study shows that taking the CYP2D6 inhibitor paroxetine prior to taking ibogaine 20 mg increases the exposure to ibogaine and its metabolite noribogaine by 2-fold when compared with ibogaine alone.

Here's how this one works: Lorcaserin can put the brakes on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6, and your body uses that same enzyme to break down ibogaine, the active part of Iboga. So if the two were taken together, ibogaine could pile up to higher levels than expected (one study using a different CYP2D6 blocker saw roughly a doubling). That matters because Iboga itself is the bigger concern here, with real risks of dangerous heart rhythm changes and serotonin overload, especially alongside a serotonin-acting drug like Lorcaserin.

Keep in mind ibogaine is illegal in the U.S. and genuinely unsafe outside research. I would not combine these. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing Iboga with anything.

  • Lorcaserin is used to help adults who are obese or who are overweight and have weight-related medical problems to lose weight and keep from gaining back that weight. Lorcaserin must be used along with a reduced calorie diet and an exercise plan. Lorcaserin is in a class of medications called serotonin receptor agonists. It works by increasing feelings of fullness so that less food is eaten.
