Jamaican Dogwood and tipranavir

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between tipranavir and Jamaican Dogwood in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for tipranavir

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. tipranavir is filed under 11 classifications — including protease inhibitors (pis), cytochrome p450 2c19 (cyp2c19) substrates, cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) inducers. Jamaican Dogwood has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being cns depressants (moderate) — and none of tipranavir’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for tipranavir. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 1,379 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for tipranavir that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Jamaican Dogwood’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Jamaican Dogwood side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Jamaican Dogwood has no side effects.

How to take them

Some tipranavir Products Have a Food Rule — Jamaican Dogwood Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing tipranavir says to take it with food. If you take Jamaican Dogwood on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate — and take tipranavir with a meal where the label says to.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two tipranavir products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. The label we read is quoted below — check the directions on your own box or bottle, or ask your pharmacist, for how to take the exact product you were given.

( 2.2 ) APTIVUS taken with ritonavir tablets must be taken with meals ( 2.1 ) APTIVUS capsules must be swallowed whole and must not be opened or chewed ( 2.1 ) Children should be assessed for their ability to swallow capsules before prescribing APTIVUS capsules.

From the Dosage and Administration section of the FDA label we read for tipranavir — where that label names a specific product, the instruction is that product's. Read the label on DailyMed ›

A food rule is not an interaction — it is about how much of the medicine you absorb. The directions that came with your own product, and your pharmacist, outrank anything on this page.

About Jamaican Dogwood

What is Jamaican Dogwood?

  • Insomnia and sleep trouble
  • Nerve pain
  • Anxiety and tension
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Muscle pain and spasms
  • Migraine and headaches

Jamaican dogwood is a tree bark traditionally used to promote sleep and ease pain, but high-quality human studies are lacking. It can be toxic in larger amounts and should be used cautiously, if at all, and never during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it.

Piscidia piscipula · Fabaceae · Bark of the root and stem · Dried bark, tinctures, liquid extracts, capsules, teas

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Jamaican Dogwood is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Jamaican Dogwood record says about it on its own.

Jamaican Dogwood: dosing

There is no well-established, standardized dose for Jamaican dogwood. Products vary widely in strength, and the bark's natural compounds can be potent, so there is no safe "recommended" amount we can confidently give.If you choose to use a product, follow the directions on the label exactly and do not exceed them. It is best to start any new supplement only after checking with a pharmacist or doctor, who can help you weigh the risks. Avoid using it long-term or in high amounts.

About Tipranavir

What Is Tipranavir Used For?

Brand name: Aptivus

Aptivus (tipranavir) is used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in pediatric patients weighing at least 36 kg (about 79 lbs). It is specifically for people who have already tried other HIV treatments and whose virus has become resistant to more than one protease inhibitor. It is always taken together with a low dose of ritonavir and with other HIV medications.

Aptivus is not recommended for people who have never taken HIV treatment before (treatment-naïve patients). Using tipranavir alongside additional active HIV drugs improves the chances of it working well.
