Japanese Persimmon and Bosentan

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Bosentan

Bosentan falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Japanese Persimmon interacts with.

Japanese persimmon is thought to have hypotensive effects. Theoretically, concurrent use might increase risk of hypotension with drugs that lower blood pressure. These include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: persimmon products, especially concentrated leaf extracts or supplements, may have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of their own. Bosentan (Tracleer) works by relaxing and widening blood vessels in your lungs, and that can also nudge your overall blood pressure down a bit. Stack the two together and you could see a little extra drop, which might leave you feeling dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or wobbly when you stand up quickly.

Now, this is mostly a theoretical concern, and simply enjoying persimmon as a fruit is unlikely to cause trouble. The bigger question is with concentrated supplements or extracts. If you're thinking about those, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on your blood pressure.
