Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing with Columvi (glofitamab): it's a powerful cancer immunotherapy that ramps up your immune system against lymphoma, but the treatment and the disease can also leave your body more vulnerable to infections. Kefir is a fermented drink that carries live, actively growing bacteria and yeast. In someone whose immune defenses are lowered, the worry is that those live microbes could, in theory, take hold and cause an infection rather than simply passing through harmlessly.

I want to be honest that this concern is theoretical and comes from lab-type reasoning, not real cases in people on this drug. Still, because your immune system may be weakened during treatment, please run kefir (and other live-culture foods or probiotic supplements) by your oncology team before adding it.

About Kefir

What is Kefir?

  • Digestive health
  • Source of probiotics
  • Lactose intolerance support
  • General immune support
  • Gut microbiome balance

Kefir is a fermented drink made by adding kefir grains to milk (or sugar water), creating a tangy beverage rich in probiotics. It is generally a safe, nutritious food that may support gut health, but strong evidence for treating specific medical conditions is still limited. If you have a weakened immune system or other health concerns, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
