Nusinersen Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Ketogenic Diet interacts with.

Although there is some concern that the ketogenic diet might have additive effects when used with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs, most clinical research does not show this effect.
One small observational study found that the ketogenic diet was associated with prolonged bleeding times in 16 of 51 (31%) children with epilepsy who were also on chronic anticonvulsant therapy. However, a larger observational study of 162 children with epilepsy taking chronic anticonvulsants has found that following the ketogenic diet does not increase the risk of bleeding, even in the 25 children undergoing surgery. Research in adults also has not reported changes in bleeding time.

Here's the honest picture: the interaction we have on file pairs the ketogenic diet with blood thinners, and it points to a small, unlikely chance of slightly longer bleeding times. But Spinraza (nusinersen) isn't really a blood thinner in the usual sense. It's given as a spinal injection to boost a protein your nerves and muscles need in spinal muscular atrophy. It isn't broken down by the liver enzymes that diet usually affects, so the keto diet is very unlikely to change how well it works.

One thing worth a mention: people on Spinraza already get routine blood clotting checks, since the drug itself can affect clotting and platelets. If you're following a strict keto diet, it's a good idea to let your care team know so they keep an eye on those labs. The evidence here is weak and mostly reassuring, so don't be alarmed, just keep your doctor in the loop.

What Is Nusinersen Injection Used For?

Brand name: Spinraza

Spinraza (nusinersen) is used to treat spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) — a genetic disease that causes progressive muscle weakness by reducing the body's ability to make a protein called SMN (survival motor neuron). Spinraza is approved for pediatric and adult patients with SMA.

Spinraza is given by intrathecal injection — directly into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord — so the medicine can reach the central nervous system where it's needed most.
