Topiramate falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Khella interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might result in increased photosensitivity. Khella constituents can cause photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the gist with Khella and topiramate: this isn't about one changing how the other works in your body. It's about your skin. Khella naturally contains compounds (khellin and visnagin) that can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, meaning you may burn faster or break out in a rash with less sun than usual. Topiramate can also cause some sun sensitivity in certain people, so stacking the two together could, in theory, add up.

I'll be honest, this one rests on weak, anecdotal evidence, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Topiramate's better-known effects (tingling in the hands, foggy thinking, less appetite) aren't changed here. If you do try khella, just use good sunscreen and a hat, and check with your pharmacist first.

What Is Topiramate Used For?

Brand names: Topamax, Trokendi XR, Qudexy XR, Eprontia

  • Topiramate is used alone or with other medications to treat certain types of seizures including primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (formerly known as a grand mal seizure; seizure that involves the entire body) and partial onset seizures (seizures that involve only one part of the brain). Topiramate is also used with other medications to control seizures in people who have Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a disorder that causes seizures and developmental delays). Topiramate is also used to prevent migraine headaches but not to relieve the pain of migraine headaches when they occur. Topiramate is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.
