Hydrochlorothiazide falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Khella interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might result in increased photosensitivity. Khella constituents can cause photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the simple version: both khella and hydrochlorothiazide can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Hydrochlorothiazide is already well known for causing this, so people taking it can sunburn faster or react more strongly to UV light. Khella's natural compounds (khellin and visnagin) may add to that effect, so using the two together could leave your skin even more prone to burning or developing a rash after time outdoors.

I want to be honest about the strength of this one. It's theoretical and based only on scattered anecdotal reports, not solid studies, so it isn't a reason to panic. Still, it's easy to play it safe with sunscreen, a hat, and shade. Before adding khella, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Hydrochlorothiazide

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
