Here's the thing with pairing khella and diphenhydramine (Benadryl): the concern isn't about how your body breaks the medicine down. It's about your skin. Khella contains compounds (like khellin) that can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, and diphenhydramine is also listed as a drug that can cause some sun sensitivity. Taken together, the idea is that they might add up and leave you more likely to get a sunburn or a rash with less sun than usual.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. It's theoretical and based only on anecdotal reports, not solid studies, so don't lose sleep over it. If you do use both, simple sun precautions (sunscreen, a hat, covering up) go a long way. And please check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting khella, since it has other risks too.

Diphenhydramine temporarily relieves symptoms of hay fever, other upper respiratory allergies, and the common cold — including runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

After Bite Xtra gel is formulated for topical use and is approved to temporarily relieve pain and itching from minor burns, minor cuts and scrapes, insect bites, minor skin irritations, and rashes from poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.
