Insulin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Kousso interacts with.

Theoretically, kousso might have an additive effect with antidiabetes drugs and cause hypoglycemia. Animal research shows that kousso flower extract modestly decreases blood glucose levels in diabetic mice.
Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Here's the simple version: insulin already lowers your blood sugar, and there's a chance Kousso could nudge it down a little further. In one animal study, Kousso flower extract slightly lowered blood glucose in diabetic mice. Stacked on top of your insulin, that could in theory add up and push you toward hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), with symptoms like shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, or feeling lightheaded.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is only a theory based on animal data, not solid human studies, so the real-world effect in people is unknown. Insulin isn't a prodrug, so this is about an additive sugar-lowering effect, not changed metabolism. Since lows can be serious, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and keep monitoring your blood sugar closely.

About Kousso

What is Kousso?

  • Tapeworm infection (traditional anthelmintic)

Kousso is the dried flower of the African tree Hagenia abyssinica, used traditionally—especially in Ethiopia—to expel tapeworms. It was once listed in older pharmacopeias as a worm treatment, but it has largely been replaced by safer, more reliable modern medicines and can cause significant side effects. There is no good modern evidence supporting its use, so talk to a pharmacist or doctor before considering it.
