SILDENAFIL (Viagra)

Theoretically, concurrent use of sildenafil and L-arginine might increase the risk for hypotension.
In vivo, concurrent use of L-arginine and sildenafil has resulted in increased vasodilation. Theoretically, concurrent use might have additive vasodilatory and hypotensive effects. However, in studies evaluating the combined use of L-arginine and sildenafil for erectile dysfunction, hypotension was not reported.

Here's the gist: both sildenafil (Viagra) and L-arginine work by widening your blood vessels. Sildenafil does it through one pathway, and L-arginine helps your body make nitric oxide, which relaxes vessels too. Stack them together and, in theory, those effects could add up and nudge your blood pressure a little lower than expected.

In real life this is mostly a theoretical concern. Studies that actually combined the two for erectile dysfunction didn't report low blood pressure as a problem. Still, if you notice dizziness, lightheadedness, a pounding headache, or flushing, that's worth paying attention to, especially if you also take nitrates or blood pressure meds. Before pairing them, have a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor so they can look at your full picture.

What Is Sildenafil Used For?

Brand name: Viagra

Sildenafil treats two distinct conditions depending on the product. Viagra (tablet) and Vybrique (dissolving oral film) are approved for erectile dysfunction (ED) — difficulty getting or keeping an erection. Generic sildenafil tablets and oral film are also approved for ED.

Revatio and several generic sildenafil products (tablets, oral suspension, and injection) are used for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs — in adults to improve exercise ability and slow the disease from getting worse. Revatio oral suspension and injection are also approved for PAH in children ages 1 to 17.
