ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Temafloxacin

Temafloxacin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lacticaseibacillus Paracasei interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lacticaseibacillus paracasei with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. paracasei.
L. paracasei preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. paracasei preparations by at least two hours.

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing: Temafloxacin is an antibiotic, and like other antibiotics it doesn't tell the difference between harmful bacteria and the friendly probiotic bacteria in your Lacticaseibacillus paracasei supplement. If you swallow them at the same time, the antibiotic can kill off a good chunk of those live cultures before they ever get to work. This won't hurt you or change how your Temafloxacin fights infection. It just means you're paying for a probiotic that may not do much.

The simple fix is timing. Try to space them out by at least two hours, so each one has its own window. This is based on how these products work rather than hard study data, so it's a sensible habit rather than a strict rule. Your pharmacist can help you set up the schedule.

This page covers Lacticaseibacillus Paracasei only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Temafloxacin page lists 44 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Bacillus Coagulans (moderate), Bacillus Subtilis (moderate), Bifidobacterium Animalis Subsp. Lactis (moderate) and Bifidobacterium Bifidum (moderate).

By severity: 1 major · 33 moderate · 10 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Temafloxacin page

“Activated charcoal is the one major-rated interaction with temafloxacin (Omniflox), a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and it deserves genuine caution because charcoal can soak up the drug in the gut and cut how much reaches your bloodstream, which risks letting the infection win. The broader pattern is milder but consistent.”
