Chloramphenicol falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Crispatus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus crispatus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. crispatus.
Lactobacillus crispatus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. crispatus preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the simple version: Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic, and Lactobacillus crispatus is a live probiotic. Antibiotics don't pick and choose perfectly, so a drug like chloramphenicol can kill off some of the helpful bacteria in your probiotic right along with the bad bugs it's meant to fight. That means the probiotic may simply work less well while you're on this medication. This is a theoretical concern based on how the two interact, not a dangerous reaction, and it doesn't make the chloramphenicol unsafe.

The easy fix is timing. Spacing your Lactobacillus dose at least two hours apart from chloramphenicol gives the good bacteria a better chance to survive. Since chloramphenicol is reserved for serious infections, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding any probiotic.

What Is Chloramphenicol Injection Used For?

Brand names: Chloromycetin, Chloromycetin Ophthalmic, Chloromycetin Injection

Chloramphenicol Sodium Succinate Injection is used intravenously to treat serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is active against organisms including Haemophilus influenzae, Salmonella species (including Salmonella typhi, the cause of typhoid fever), Rickettsia, and the lymphogranuloma-psittacosis group.

Because of its serious risks, this medication is reserved for infections where less dangerous antibiotics will not work. It must not be used for minor infections such as colds, flu, or sore throats, or to prevent infections.
