Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thinking behind this one. Entresto contains valsartan, which already nudges your potassium levels upward as part of how it protects the heart. Kelp like Laminaria naturally carries some potassium too, so stacking the two could, in theory, push your potassium a little too high (a state called hyperkalemia).

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not something proven in studies, and the potassium in a serving of kelp is fairly small. Still, if too much potassium builds up, it can cause muscle weakness, an odd or irregular heartbeat, or tingling. The bigger worry with Laminaria is honestly its iodine load and your thyroid. Either way, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a kelp supplement, especially if your kidneys aren't perfect.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sacubitril, Valsartan page

“Entresto (sacubitril and valsartan) is a heart failure medicine, and heart failure patients tend to be heavy supplement users, reaching for fish oil, potassium, and herbal blood-pressure remedies. That instinct carries real risk here.”

About Laminaria

What is Laminaria?

  • Source of dietary iodine
  • Thyroid support
  • Cervical dilation (medical procedure)
  • Weight management
  • Digestive and detox supplements
  • General nutrition (vitamins and minerals)

Laminaria is a type of brown seaweed (kelp) that is very rich in iodine and is also used in medical settings as a natural cervical dilator. Because its iodine content can be high and variable, supplements may upset thyroid function, so it should be used cautiously and under professional guidance. Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using kelp products, especially if you have a thyroid condition.

About Valsartan and Sacubitril

What Is Valsartan and Sacubitril Used For?

Brand name: Entresto

Sacubitril and valsartan is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in adult patients with chronic heart failure. The benefit is most clearly seen in patients whose heart pumps with a lower-than-normal ejection fraction (the percentage of blood the heart pushes out with each beat).

It is also approved to treat symptomatic heart failure with reduced left ventricular function in children aged 1 year and older. In pediatric patients, it lowers a blood marker of heart stress (NT-proBNP) and is expected to improve heart outcomes.
