Why this applies to Benznidazole

Benznidazole falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Latilactobacillus Sakei interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Latilactobacillus sakei with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. sakei.
Latilactobacillus sakei preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. sakei preparations by at least two hours.

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: this isn't your benznidazole being affected, it's the other way around. Benznidazole is medicine that kills the parasite behind Chagas disease, but it doesn't know the difference between harmful germs and the friendly bacteria in a probiotic. So if your child takes Latilactobacillus sakei at the same time, the benznidazole may simply kill off a good chunk of those live probiotic organisms before they can do anything useful.

The good news is this is a fairly minor, mostly theoretical concern, and an easy fix. A simple workaround is to space them out by at least two hours. Your benznidazole will still work just the same for treating the Chagas infection. As always, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any probiotic.

About Benznidazole

What Is Benznidazole Used For?

Brand name: Benznidazole

Benznidazole Tablets are approved to treat Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis) — a parasitic infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi — in pediatric patients 2 to 12 years of age. This approval is specifically for children in that age range; safety and effectiveness have not been established in children under 2 or over 12.

This approval was granted under the FDA's accelerated approval pathway, based on evidence that treated patients developed negative antibody results against the parasite. Confirmation of full clinical benefit is still being studied in ongoing trials.
