ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Cefditoren Pivoxil
Cefditoren Pivoxil falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Latilactobacillus Sakei interacts with.
Latilactobacillus sakei preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. sakei preparations by at least two hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: Cefditoren (Spectracef) is an antibiotic, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. Latilactobacillus sakei is a probiotic, which means it's made of live, friendly bacteria. If you swallow them at the same time, the antibiotic can't tell the difference and may wipe out a good chunk of those probiotic organisms before they get a chance to do anything. So the concern isn't that cefditoren becomes dangerous or stops fighting your infection. It's the other way around: the probiotic may simply not work as well.
This is a theoretical interaction based on how the two work, not strong human studies, so don't worry. A common workaround is to space them apart by at least two hours. Check with your pharmacist to be sure of the timing.
