Fluvoxamine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Mace interacts with.

Animal research suggests that intraperitoneal injections of myristicin, a constituent of mace, can induce cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme system. Theoretically, concomitant use of mace with drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 may increase the clearance of these drugs and reduce their effects. Some substrates of CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline, zileuton (Zyflo), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Here's the gist for fluvoxamine (Luvox): your body clears it largely through a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. One compound in mace, myristicin, was shown in animal studies to rev up that enzyme. If that holds true in people, it could mean your body breaks down fluvoxamine a little faster, which might soften its effect on your OCD or social anxiety symptoms over time.

The good news is this is purely theoretical, based on lab and animal work, not real human cases. Normal cooking amounts of mace as a spice are very unlikely to matter. The concern is really with concentrated mace supplements. Please don't stop or change your dose on your own. If you're considering a mace supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. Both fluvoxamine maleate tablets and Fluvoxamine Maleate extended-release capsules are approved to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) — a condition marked by unwanted, recurring thoughts (obsessions) and/or repetitive behaviors (compulsions) that cause significant distress or interfere with daily life.

Fluvoxamine maleate tablets are approved for adults and for children and adolescents ages 8 to 17. Fluvoxamine Maleate extended-release capsules are approved for adults with OCD; their use in pediatric patients naive to fluvoxamine requires special prescriber consideration regarding the lowest available dose.
