Why this applies to Nalbuphine

Nalbuphine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Several volatile oils in mace, such as methyleugenol, isoeugenol, safrole, myristicin, 1,8-cineole, and geranyl acetate, seem to have sedative effects. Evidence from animal research suggests that methyleugenol can induce anesthesia for a similar duration as pentobarbital. Due to the sedative effects of certain mace constituents, taking medicinal amounts of mace in combination with other CNS depressants may have additive effects. However, evidence from other animal research suggests that myristicin can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Until more is known, use medicinal amounts of mace cautiously in combination with CNS depressants. Some CNS depressants include clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others.

Here's the simple version: nalbuphine (Nubain) is an opioid that already slows down your central nervous system, which is why it can make you drowsy, dizzy, or slow your breathing. Some of the aromatic oils in mace, like myristicin and methyleugenol, appear to have their own calming or sedating effect in lab and animal studies. Stack the two together and you could, in theory, feel more sleepy or sluggish than you would expect.

I want to be straight with you though: this is a theoretical concern based on pharmacology and animal research, not strong human evidence. Mace sprinkled on food as a spice is very unlikely to cause any trouble. The caution really applies to concentrated mace supplements. Since nalbuphine is given for real pain, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing it with any mace supplement.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. Brand name: Nubain

Nalbuphine Hydrochloride Injection is used to manage pain severe enough to require an opioid when other pain treatments have not worked or cannot be tolerated. It is only appropriate when non-opioid options are inadequate.

It can also be used as part of balanced anesthesia during surgery, for pain relief before and after operations, and for pain management during labor and delivery.
