Drug & supplement interaction

Maqui + Albendazole

Albendazole brand name: Albenza.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Maqui and Albendazole in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the label for Albendazole states a food rule worth keeping to.

Maqui and Albendazole

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Albendazole and Maqui in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Albendazole

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Albendazole is filed under 2 classifications — cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) inducers, oral drugs. Maqui has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (minor) — and none of Albendazole’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Albendazole’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Maqui. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Albendazole’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you take both. 10 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Severe muscle breakdown Worth acting on
  • A severe skin reaction Worth acting on
  • Seizures Worth acting on
  • A low platelet count Worth acting on
  • Kidney problems Worth acting on
  • Anemia Worth acting on
  • Hives Worth acting on
  • A low white blood cell count Worth acting on
  • Liver problems Worth acting on
  • An allergic reaction Worth acting on

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Albendazole. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 1,886 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Albendazole that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Maqui’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Maqui side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Maqui has no side effects.

How to take them

Some Albendazole Products Have a Food Rule — Maqui Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Albendazole says to take it with food. If you take Maqui on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate — and take Albendazole with a meal where the label says to.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Albendazole products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. The label we read is quoted below — check the directions on your own box or bottle, or ask your pharmacist, for how to take the exact product you were given.

Albendazole tablets should be taken with food.

From the Dosage and Administration section of the FDA label we read for Albendazole — where that label names a specific product, the instruction is that product's. Read the label on DailyMed ›

A food rule is not an interaction — it is about how much of the medicine you absorb. The directions that came with your own product, and your pharmacist, outrank anything on this page.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Albendazole

This page covers Maqui only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Albendazole page lists 18 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Coffee Charcoal (moderate), European Mandrake (moderate), Glucomannan (moderate) and Guar Gum (moderate).

By severity: 1 major · 8 moderate · 9 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Albendazole page

“Activated charcoal is the one entry here I would treat as a genuine hazard with albendazole. It soaks up drugs in the gut, and albendazole, an antiparasitic taken for worm and tapeworm infections, is already absorbed poorly to begin with.”

About Maqui

What is Maqui?

  • Antioxidant support
  • Blood sugar support
  • Eye health and dry eye
  • Anti-inflammatory support
  • Heart health

Maqui is a dark purple berry from Chile that is very rich in antioxidant plant pigments called anthocyanins. Early research suggests it may help with things like blood sugar, dry eye, and inflammation, but the human evidence is still limited and far from proven. It is generally well tolerated as a food, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.

Aristotelia chilensis · Elaeocarpaceae · Berries (fruit); leaves are used traditionally · Capsules, powder, juice, extracts, dried berries

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Maqui is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Maqui record says about it on its own.

Maqui: dosing

There is no official or well-established dose for maqui. Doses used in research have varied widely depending on whether the product was a juice, powder, or standardized extract, so it is hard to recommend a single amount. The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed them.

About Albendazole

What Is Albendazole Used For?

Brand name: Albenza

Albendazole tablets — sold under the brand name Albenza as well as generically — are used to treat two specific parasitic infections. The first is neurocysticercosis, an infection of the brain caused by larval forms of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium). The second is cystic hydatid disease, an infection of the liver, lungs, or the lining of the abdomen caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus).

Both Albenza (the brand) and generic albendazole tablets are FDA-approved for these same two conditions. Your doctor will determine which form is right for you.
