Here's the simple version: marshmallow root is full of mucilage, a slippery, gel-like fiber. The thinking is that this gel might coat your stomach and gut just enough to slow down or partly block the absorption of pills you swallow, including famotidine. If less famotidine gets absorbed, you might not get its full acid-lowering benefit, so you could notice more heartburn or stomach discomfort than expected.

The good news is this is only a theoretical concern based on how marshmallow behaves, not something proven to cause real problems. Famotidine is not a prodrug, so we're just talking about possible reduced effect, not extra side effects. A practical fix is to space them out: take your famotidine first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the marshmallow. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist.

Marshmallow root is a traditional herb rich in soothing, gel-like fibers called mucilage, which is why it has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and stomach irritation. Evidence for these uses is mostly traditional and preliminary, but it is generally considered gentle and well-tolerated for short-term use. What Is Famotidine Used For?

Brand names: Pepcid, Famotidine, Pepcid AC, Famotidine Injection

Famotidine treats a range of acid-related conditions. Over-the-counter tablet products — including Acid Controller, Acid Reducer, Acid Relief, Amazon Basic Care Acid Reducer, basic care acid reducer, and Calmicid AC — are used to relieve and prevent heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach.

Prescription-strength famotidine tablets and oral suspension are indicated for active duodenal ulcers (ulcers in the small intestine), active gastric ulcers (stomach ulcers), GERD (acid reflux disease), erosive esophagitis (acid-damaged esophagus), and pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The oral suspension is also indicated in children from birth onward for GERD and, in children one year and older, for peptic ulcer disease. Famotidine injection is used in hospitalized patients who cannot take medication by mouth.
