Mesoglycan and Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone

Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Mesoglycan interacts with.

Theoretically, combined use might increase bleeding risk. However, human evidence suggests that mesoglycan has profibrinolytic activity without affecting coagulation. These agents include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The piece of this combo medicine that matters here is the aspirin. Aspirin already thins your blood a bit by keeping platelets from sticking together. Mesoglycan contains heparin-like compounds that may also nudge your blood toward clotting less easily. Stack the two and, in theory, you could bruise more easily or bleed a little longer from cuts, your gums, or your stomach.

The good news: actual human studies suggest mesoglycan mostly helps break down clots without changing normal clotting much, so this concern is more theoretical than proven. Still, since aspirin can irritate the stomach on its own, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding mesoglycan, especially if you notice any unusual bleeding.

About Mesoglycan

What is Mesoglycan?

  • Vein health and chronic venous insufficiency
  • Leg ulcers
  • Peripheral artery disease and leg pain
  • Reducing blood clot risk
  • Hemorrhoids

Mesoglycan is a blend of natural sugar-protein compounds (glycosaminoglycans, including heparan sulfate and dermatan sulfate) taken from animal tissue and used mainly for blood vessel and circulation problems. Some small studies suggest possible benefit for vein-related conditions, but the overall evidence is limited and not strong. Because it can affect blood clotting, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using it.
