Why this applies to Dalteparin

Dalteparin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Octacosanol interacts with.

Theoretically, octacosanol might inhibit platelet aggregation; however, clinical research suggests that this effect may not be clinically significant.
Octacosanol is the main component of policosanol. Some clinical research shows that taking policosanol 10-50 mg daily for 7-15 days can inhibit platelet aggregation in healthy patients. However, one clinical trial shows that taking policosanol 10 mg twice daily for 2 weeks prior to initiating warfarin does not affect warfarin pharmacokinetics or warfarin response. Furthermore, a study in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with a drug-eluting stent found that taking policosanol 40 mg plus clopidogrel and aspirin daily for 30 days modestly reduced the risk for minor bleeding events when compared with taking clopidogrel and aspirin alone.

Dalteparin (Fragmin) is a blood thinner you inject, and it already lowers your blood's ability to clot. Octacosanol, the main piece of policosanol, has been studied for a mild effect on platelets (the cells that help form clots). On paper, stacking something that touches platelets on top of a blood thinner could add up to a bit more bleeding risk.

That said, the human research here is reassuring and a little mixed. In real studies the platelet effect looked small and not very meaningful, so it's a theoretical concern more than a proven danger. Still, keep an eye out for easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or cuts that are slow to stop. Before you add octacosanol, run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can weigh it for your situation.

Octacosanol is a waxy long-chain alcohol from plant sources that is most often promoted for exercise endurance and cholesterol support, but solid human evidence is limited and results are mixed. It appears generally well tolerated in supplement amounts, but it is not a proven treatment for any condition, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

About Dalteparin Injection

What Is Dalteparin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fragmin

Fragmin (dalteparin) injection is used to prevent blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT) in people having hip replacement or abdominal surgery, and in hospitalized patients who are largely immobile due to acute illness. It is also used to reduce ischemic complications — meaning clot-related events — in people with unstable angina or a type of heart attack called non-Q-wave MI, when given alongside aspirin.

Fragmin is approved for the extended treatment of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE — blood clots in the veins or lungs) in adults with cancer, to reduce the chance of clots coming back, for up to six months. It is also approved to treat symptomatic VTE in pediatric patients from birth (at least 35 weeks gestational age) onward. Fragmin is not intended for the acute (immediate emergency) treatment of VTE.
