PHENYTOIN (Dilantin)

Theoretically, peony might reduce the levels and clinical effects of phenytoin.
Animal research shows that taking peony root reduces levels of phenytoin. Some researchers suggest that peony root might affect cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C9, which metabolizes phenytoin. However, preliminary research in humans shows that peony root does not alter levels of losartan (Cozaar), which is also metabolized by CYP2C9.

Here's the gist for Mephenytoin, an older seizure medicine in the same family as phenytoin. The concern on file is that peony root might lower the amount of this drug in your body, possibly by speeding up the liver enzyme (CYP2C9) that helps break it down. If levels drop too far, the medicine may not control seizures as well as it should.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. The signal comes from lab and animal studies only, and one early human study found peony didn't change a similar CYP2C9 drug. So this is more theoretical than proven. Since seizure medicines leave little room for error, please don't start or stop peony on your own. Check with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if your seizures are well controlled now.
