Why this applies to Metformin, Sitagliptin

Metformin, Sitagliptin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Phlorizin interacts with.

Phlorizin is a potent, nonselective inhibitor of SGLT1 and SGLT2. It has been shown to reduce blood glucose levels in animal research. Theoretically, phlorizin might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. However, the likelihood of this effect is unclear due to the poor bioavailability and rapid degradation of phlorizin. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Here's the simple version. Janumet pairs two diabetes medicines, metformin and sitagliptin, that work to bring your blood sugar down. Phlorizin has its own sugar-lowering action in the lab, where it pushes more sugar out through your urine. So the worry on paper is that stacking phlorizin on top of your Janumet could push your blood sugar too low.

The good news is this concern is mostly theoretical. Phlorizin is poorly absorbed when swallowed and breaks down quickly, so it may not do much in real life. Still, if you ever combine them, keep an eye out for low blood sugar signs like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling confused, and check your levels. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding any phlorizin product.
