Why this applies to Saxagliptin

Saxagliptin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Phlorizin interacts with.

Phlorizin is a potent, nonselective inhibitor of SGLT1 and SGLT2. It has been shown to reduce blood glucose levels in animal research. Theoretically, phlorizin might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. However, the likelihood of this effect is unclear due to the poor bioavailability and rapid degradation of phlorizin. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Here's the basic idea: phlorizin works by pushing extra sugar out through your urine, which can lower blood sugar on its own. Saxagliptin (Onglyza) lowers blood sugar a different way, by helping your body release more of its own insulin after meals. Stack the two together and the worry is simply additive, meaning their combined effect could drop your blood sugar more than expected.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is a theoretical concern based mostly on lab and animal work, and phlorizin is poorly absorbed when swallowed, so a real-world effect is uncertain. On its own, saxagliptin rarely causes low blood sugar. If you do use a phlorizin product, check your glucose more often and watch for shakiness, sweating, or dizziness.
