Here's the basic idea with Poria mushroom and codeine. Codeine is a narcotic that already calms the nervous system, which is why it can make you drowsy or slow your breathing. Animal studies hint that Poria may have its own mild sedative, calming effect. So in theory, pairing the two could stack those effects, leaving you more sleepy, foggy, dizzy, or constipated than codeine alone would.

I want to be honest with you though: this is purely a theoretical concern based on lab and animal work, and it has not been seen in real people. The risk is likely small. Still, if you plan to use both, especially while you're getting used to codeine, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor first and watch for extra drowsiness.

Codeine Sulfate tablets are used for the management of mild to moderate pain in adults and adolescents when other treatments have not worked well enough or are not tolerated. It is an opioid medication, so it is only appropriate when non-opioid options are inadequate.

Because of its serious risks — including addiction, misuse, and overdose — codeine is reserved for patients who truly need an opioid. Prescribers are expected to use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time possible.
