CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Codeine Sulfate
Codeine Sulfate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Poria Mushroom interacts with.
Animal research shows that poria mushroom extract has sedative properties. This interaction has not been shown in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for codeine: besides easing pain, it tends to make people drowsy and a bit foggy. Poria mushroom has shown calming, sedative-like effects in animal studies, so in theory pairing the two could add up and leave you feeling more sleepy, dizzy, or out of it than usual.
I want to be honest with you, though. This concern is theoretical and based on lab and animal work, not on people, so it's far from proven. Codeine on its own already deserves respect for causing sedation and slowed breathing, especially at higher doses or with other depressants. If you'd like to use Poria while taking codeine, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and watch for extra drowsiness.

About Poria Mushroom
What is Poria Mushroom?
- Fluid retention and swelling
- Digestive complaints
- Sleep and calming support
- General wellness and immune support
- Urinary support
Poria mushroom (Fu Ling) is a fungus long used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, mainly as a mild diuretic and digestive and calming aid. Modern scientific evidence in humans is very limited, so its benefits are not well proven. It is generally considered well tolerated, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.
