Poria Mushroom and Cyclizine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Cyclizine

Cyclizine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Poria Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, poria mushroom might decrease the clinical effects of anticholinergic drugs.
In animal research, poria mushroom essential oil reduces acetylcholinesterase activity. This interaction has not been shown in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Cyclizine is an antihistamine you take for nausea, vomiting, and motion sickness, and part of how it works is by blocking acetylcholine, a nerve-signaling chemical in your body. Here's the theory behind this pairing: lab and animal studies hint that poria mushroom may slow the breakdown of acetylcholine, leaving more of it around. Since cyclizine works by quieting that same signal, having extra acetylcholine could, in theory, push against cyclizine and make it a little less effective at controlling your nausea or dizziness.

I want to be honest with you, though. This has only been seen in animal research and has never been shown in real people, so it's more of a 'good to know' than a red flag. If you'd like to use both, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Cyclizine page

“Cyclizine (Marezine) is an antihistamine for motion sickness and vertigo, and it already dries the mouth, blurs vision, and slows the gut through its anticholinergic action. That built-in effect is why this list of 46 supplements warrants genuine care, starting with the three rated major.”

About Poria Mushroom

What is Poria Mushroom?

  • Fluid retention and swelling
  • Digestive complaints
  • Sleep and calming support
  • General wellness and immune support
  • Urinary support

Poria mushroom (Fu Ling) is a fungus long used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, mainly as a mild diuretic and digestive and calming aid. Modern scientific evidence in humans is very limited, so its benefits are not well proven. It is generally considered well tolerated, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.
