Propolis + Rabeprazole

Rabeprazole brand name: Pariet.

Moderate Interaction
The bottom line Moderate

Propolis and Rabeprazole

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Propolis interacts with whole categories of medication. Rabeprazole falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Propolis in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES

1 of 3

Why this applies to Rabeprazole

Rabeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Propolis interacts with.

Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2C19. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2C19 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2C19 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the situation with propolis and rabeprazole. Your body relies partly on an enzyme called CYP2C19 to clear rabeprazole from your system. In test-tube studies, propolis appears to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, rabeprazole could build up a little, which in theory might mean slightly stronger or longer-lasting effects, things like headache, stomach upset, or diarrhea. Rabeprazole isn't a prodrug, so more of it means more drug activity, not less.

The good news: this is very weak evidence. It comes from lab dishes, and animal studies didn't show a real effect, likely because not much propolis actually reaches the bloodstream. It hasn't been reported in people. Normal use is unlikely to cause trouble, but if you take concentrated, high-dose propolis daily, mention it to your pharmacist.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES

2 of 3

Rabeprazole also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.

Here's the gist with propolis and your rabeprazole (Pariet). In a test tube, propolis can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, which is one of the players that helps clear rabeprazole from your body. In theory, blocking it could let rabeprazole levels creep up a bit, which might mean more of its typical, generally mild side effects like headache, nausea, or a little stomach upset.

The reassuring part: this is only seen in lab studies, not in people. Animal studies didn't show a real effect, likely because not much of propolis actually reaches the bloodstream. So I wouldn't lose sleep over occasional propolis use. If you take concentrated supplement doses daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

3 of 3

Rabeprazole also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Some in vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP3A4; however, other in vitro research shows that propolis has no effect on CYP3A4 activity. Furthermore, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP3A4 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that might in inhibit CYP3A4 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with rabeprazole and propolis. Your body partly clears rabeprazole using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a few lab (test tube) studies, propolis seemed to slow that enzyme down a little. If that were to happen in people, rabeprazole could linger a bit longer and you might notice slightly more of its usual effects, like headache, mild stomach upset, or diarrhea.

Honestly, though, this is very theoretical. Other lab studies showed no effect, and animal research found no real change. It has never been reported in humans, and rabeprazole is a forgiving medicine. Everyday food amounts are unlikely to matter. If you take concentrated propolis supplements regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Rabeprazole page

“Rabeprazole (Pariet) quiets stomach acid for reflux and ulcers, but its supplement list deserves genuine care, with three serious entries to understand before anything else. Most items matter because they change how the liver breaks rabeprazole down, so its level can drift up or down.”

About Propolis

What is Propolis?

Propolis
  • Cold sores and herpes lesions (topical)
  • Sore throat and mouth sores
  • Wound and skin healing
  • Immune support
  • Oral and gum health

Propolis is a natural, resin-like substance made by bees that has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in lab studies. Early research suggests it may help with cold sores, mouth sores, and minor wounds, but high-quality evidence is limited for most uses. It is generally well tolerated, but allergic reactions can occur, especially in people allergic to bee products.

About Rabeprazole

What Is Rabeprazole Used For?

Brand name: Pariet

Rabeprazole delayed-release tablets treat a range of acid-related conditions in adults, including healing and maintenance of erosive or ulcerative GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), symptomatic GERD, duodenal ulcers, and pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. They are also used alongside antibiotics (amoxicillin and clarithromycin) to eradicate H. pylori bacteria and reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer coming back.

In adolescents 12 years and older, rabeprazole delayed-release tablets are approved for short-term treatment of symptomatic GERD. Both AcipHex and Rabeprazole Sodium delayed-release tablets share this indication set for adults and adolescents 12 and older.
