Here's the thing to know about pairing quillaia with Pomalyst (pomalidomide). Quillaia's saponins have shown some immune-boosting activity in lab studies, and pomalidomide works in part by modulating your immune system to fight multiple myeloma or Kaposi's sarcoma. In theory, an herb that nudges the immune system in a different direction could work against what your medication is trying to do.

I want to be upfront: this concern is theoretical and comes only from test-tube research, not from people actually taking both together. So it's not a reason to panic. Still, with a serious cancer therapy like this, I wouldn't add an unproven herbal supplement without checking first. Please run quillaia by your oncologist or pharmacist before using it.

Quillaia (soap bark tree) is a plant whose bark contains foaming compounds called saponins, and it is widely used as an emulsifier in foods and drinks. As a supplement or herbal remedy its benefits are not well proven, and large amounts can be irritating or toxic, so it should be used cautiously and only as directed.

About Pomalidomide

What Is Pomalidomide Used For?

Brand name: Pomalyst

Pomalidomide capsules are used in adults with multiple myeloma (a blood cancer affecting plasma cells) who have already tried at least two prior treatments — including lenalidomide and a proteasome inhibitor — and whose disease has continued to progress. It is given in combination with dexamethasone for this use.

Pomalidomide capsules are also used to treat Kaposi sarcoma (KS) — a cancer that can cause lesions on the skin and in internal organs — both in adults with AIDS-related KS after antiretroviral therapy has stopped working, and in adults with KS who are HIV-negative. The KS indication was approved based on response rate; ongoing studies are confirming long-term benefit.
