Theoretically, concomitant use of rhubarb with potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.
Some animal research suggests that anthraquinones in rhubarb might have hepatotoxic effects. Also, rhubarb use has been linked to at least 24 cases of liver injury, although details on the dose of rhubarb and duration of use in these cases is unclear.

Here's the thing to know about pairing rhubarb root with felbamate: this seizure medicine already carries a known risk of liver problems, which is why your doctor checks your liver enzymes regularly while you're on it. Rhubarb root contains compounds called anthraquinones, and there's a theory that they could be hard on the liver too. Put them together and you might, in theory, raise the chance of liver irritation.

I want to be honest that this concern is theoretical, based mostly on animal studies and a handful of poorly documented case reports, not solid human proof. Eating rhubarb stalks in pie is very different from taking concentrated root supplements. Still, with felbamate's liver risk, it's worth running any rhubarb supplement past your doctor or pharmacist first. Watch for yellowing skin, dark urine, or unusual tiredness.

About Felbamate

What Is Felbamate Used For?

Brand name: Felbatol

Felbamate is not a first-line seizure medication. It is used only when a person's epilepsy has not responded well enough to other treatments and the seizures are severe enough that the serious risks of this drug are considered acceptable.

In adults, felbamate can be used alone or alongside other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain), with or without spreading to become a full seizure. In children, felbamate is used as an add-on treatment for both partial and generalized seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy. Felbatol is specifically labeled for these uses in both adults and children.
