Rhubarb + Interferon Gamma-1b
Interferon Gamma-1b brand name: Actimmune.
Rhubarb has a moderate interaction with Interferon Gamma-1b. Theoretically, concomitant use of rhubarb with potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Interferon Gamma-1b
Interferon Gamma-1b falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Rhubarb interacts with.
Some animal research suggests that anthraquinones in rhubarb might have hepatotoxic effects. Also, rhubarb use has been linked to at least 24 cases of liver injury, although details on the dose of rhubarb and duration of use in these cases is unclear.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the concern with pairing rhubarb root supplements and Actimmune (interferon gamma-1b). Interferon gamma-1b can occasionally stress the liver on its own, and rhubarb root contains compounds called anthraquinones that, in animal studies and a handful of human reports, have been tied to liver injury. Put two things together that may each tax the liver and the theoretical worry is that you add to that burden.
I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's based mostly on pharmacology and animal data, so it's a reasonable caution, not a proven danger. Still, watch for warning signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness. Eating rhubarb stalks in a pie is not the issue here; concentrated root supplements are. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Interferon Gamma-1b page
“Liver injury is the first thing to understand about supplements and interferon gamma-1b (Actimmune), a drug given for serious immune conditions that can strain the liver on its own. All three major-rated interactions here point that way: Siberian cocklebur, an herb linked to liver failure, plus alcohol in the form of beer and wine.”

About Rhubarb
What is Rhubarb?
- Constipation
- Digestive upset
- Menopausal symptoms
- Kidney and liver conditions (traditional)
- Pancreatitis (hospital/traditional use)
Rhubarb root has a long history of use as a laxative and in traditional Chinese medicine, and its edible stalks are a common food. Most medicinal claims are backed by limited or low-quality evidence, and the root can cause cramping and diarrhea. The leaves are toxic and should never be eaten, and rhubarb supplements are best avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Interferon Gamma-1b Injection
What Is Interferon Gamma-1b Injection Used For?
Brand name: Actimmune
Actimmune (interferon gamma-1b) is approved for two specific inherited conditions. First, it reduces how often and how severely serious infections occur in people with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) — a rare inherited disorder where certain immune cells can't fight off infections properly.
Second, Actimmune is used to delay disease progression in patients with severe, malignant osteopetrosis (SMO) — a rare inherited bone disorder where bones become abnormally dense and the immune system doesn't work as it should.
