Alfalfa and Interferon Gamma-1b

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS

Why this applies to Interferon Gamma-1b

Interferon Gamma-1b falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Alfalfa interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of alfalfa with photosensitizing drugs might have additive effects.
Animal research suggests that excessive doses of alfalfa may increase photosensitivity, possibly due to its chlorophyll content. It is unclear if this effect would be clinically relevant in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with alfalfa and Actimmune (interferon gamma-1b). This isn't about alfalfa changing how your body processes the injection. Instead, both can independently make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Interferon gamma-1b itself can cause rashes and sun sensitivity for some people, and animal studies hint that large amounts of alfalfa (likely from its chlorophyll) may do the same. Stack the two and you could, in theory, sunburn more easily.

I'll be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on pharmacology and animal data, not proven in people. Food-sized amounts of alfalfa are unlikely to matter; concentrated supplements are the bigger question. If you take this combo, wearing sunscreen and watching for unusual redness is sensible. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Interferon Gamma-1b page

“Liver injury is the first thing to understand about supplements and interferon gamma-1b (Actimmune), a drug given for serious immune conditions that can strain the liver on its own. All three major-rated interactions here point that way: Siberian cocklebur, an herb linked to liver failure, plus alcohol in the form of beer and wine.”
