Talwin Compound combines aspirin with pentazocine, an opioid pain reliever that already works on your brain to ease pain. The part to keep an eye on here is the pentazocine, since opioids can cause drowsiness, dizziness, slowed breathing, and a foggy head. The concern with sage is that a few of its natural compounds may have their own mild calming effect on the nervous system. Stacking that on top of an opioid could, in theory, add to the sleepiness.

Honestly, this is a theoretical caution based only on lab and animal data, not real patient reports, and a little sage in your cooking is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated sage extracts or the essential oil are a different story. Before using those alongside Talwin, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

Sage is a common kitchen herb that is generally safe in food amounts and is traditionally used for sore throats, digestion, sweating, and memory. Some early research is encouraging for sore throat and menopausal hot flashes, but most uses are not well proven. Concentrated extracts and the essential oil should be used carefully because high doses contain a compound called thujone, which can be harmful.
