Strawberry and Iloprost

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Iloprost

Iloprost falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Strawberry interacts with.

In vitro and animal research suggests that strawberry extract can inhibit platelet aggregation due to its phenolic content. Theoretically, strawberry might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the connection worth knowing: Iloprost (Ventavis) doesn't just relax your lung blood vessels, it also makes platelets a little less sticky, so it has a mild blood-thinning side to it. Strawberry, in lab and animal studies, seems to do something similar by gently slowing platelets too. Put the two together and the worry is that bleeding or bruising could become a touch easier.

Now, take a breath. This is theoretical and based only on test-tube and animal research, not real patients. Eating strawberries with a meal is very unlikely to cause any problem. A concentrated strawberry supplement is the bigger question mark. If you notice unusual bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums, or you plan to take strawberry extract regularly, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.
