Why this applies to Modafinil

Modafinil falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Strawberry interacts with.

In vitro research suggests that strawberry extract can inhibit p-glycoprotein efflux. Theoretically, strawberry might inhibit p-glycoprotein mediated drug efflux and potentially increase levels of drugs that are substrates of p-glycoprotein. Until more is known, strawberry should be used cautiously in people taking p-glycoprotein substrates.
Drugs that might be affected include some chemotherapeutic agents (etoposide, paclitaxel, vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine), antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole), protease inhibitors (amprenavir, indinavir, nelfinavir, saquinavir), H2 antagonists (cimetidine, ranitidine), some calcium channel blockers (diltiazem, verapamil), corticosteroids, erythromycin, cisapride (Propulsid), fexofenadine (Allegra), cyclosporine, loperamide (Imodium), quinidine, and others.

Here's the gist: strawberry has been shown, in test-tube studies only, to slow down a cellular pump called P-glycoprotein. That pump helps move certain medications out of your cells. Modafinil is considered one of those pump passengers, so in theory blocking the pump could let a little more modafinil hang around in your body.

If that happened, you might notice modafinil's usual effects feeling stronger, things like jitteriness, headache, trouble sleeping, a racing heart, or anxiety. But honestly, this is based only on lab research, not real people, so it's far from proven. Eating strawberries as food is very unlikely to cause trouble. A concentrated strawberry supplement is the bigger question mark, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding one.

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
